5 Maui Must Dos
1. Snorkel At Molokini Crater
Maui is one of the top destinations for snorkeling worldwide, so you can't leave the island without experiencing it for yourself! Molokini Crater is a great place to snorkel because it is a crescent shaped island (part of the top of a volcano is submerged, and the rest of it creates this island) that acts as a barrier, enabling the reef and colorful fish to thrive here. The famously clear water will not disappoint!
Note: We did this excursion with Sail Trilogy and had a wonderful experience!
2. Hana Lava Tube
My overall opinion of the Road to Hana was that it’s quite overrated EXCEPT for the Hana Lava Tube at mile marker 31. We heavily debated stopping here, since we explored the lava tube at Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island, but it ended up being well worth it! It was $15 per person as of January 2022 (CASH ONLY), and included flashlights. The lava tube was massive and way more impressive than we anticipated!
There was one particular area in the lava tube that was a result of an unusual occurrence. A large boulder originally blocked the lava flow that resulted in the backup of lava. As the lava cooled, it created a unique texture that resembles melted chocolate.
3. Whale Watching (December-March)
Winter months are prime time for Humpback Whale watching in Hawaii. We were very surprised with how many whales we were able to see breach from land. You don't technically need a whale watching tour to see them, but being out on the water provided an entirely new perspective. We were lucky enough to see two whales breach near our boat! None of us had any luck capturing it in photos, but it was an exhilarating and unforgettable experience nonetheless.
Note: We took a tour with Redline Rafting and were so pleased with our experience.
There are many different luaus you can attend, but make sure you book in advance! It's a great way to experience traditional Hawaiian culture, food, and dancing. Unfortunately, the luau we attended was located in Lahaina where the deadly fires occurred, so that particular luau is not currently available.
'Īao Valley State Park is quaint but stunning. One small set of stairs and you are rewarded with beautiful 360 degree mountain views. Tickets are $5 per person, and parking is $10 per vehicle (entry now requires you to book tickets online in advance).
Additional Stop:
Haleakalā National Park - It is worth mentioning that many people like to watch the sunrise from Haleakalā Crater. We originally had this on our list, but due to the drive time and wanting to have enough opportunities to relax, we decided to pass. If you are wanting to visit all of the main attractions Maui has to offer, I hear this is one you should definitely do!
